Closing Time

A sad piece of news reached my attention today. One of Guelph's oldest and most loved bookshops is closing it's doors. The Bookstore that was established in 1978 by Nancy Giovanelli, Macondo Books, held on for as long as it could but it can't remain open any longer. 36 years after opening the bookstore has seen the diminishing sale of books and inevitably it affects business. This breaks my heart. While I am sitting here astonished that I never stepped foot into the store, my heart is tearing a little bit inside my chest. Nothing can compare to the feeling I get whilst wandering through bookstores, new or used. It's like this little piece of my heart just sighs and says "Oh finally, I've missed this" and I feel at home. I definitely have spent hours and hours in bookstores just wandering, taking it all in . The discovery of a new book or of a classic is an immeasurable feeling.

The fact that technology is taking over how people are reading now infuriates me.  Don't get me wrong I understand the appeal of having a limitless amount of books in one place; after all that is my dream. I just want them in a library. There is something beautiful about a shelf full of books that contain numerous stories and adventures to take you on. And flipping through the pages while you get one step closer to the conclusion is such a wonderful feeling.

So it saddens me that this 36 year old bookstore is going out of business. I'm hoping that books make a comeback at some point, and that technology slows down. Not that it is likely. I'm definitely taking a trip to this beautiful shop this weekend to support them and hold on to a little piece of the magic that is, and was, this bookshop.

Check out their facebook page and support them if you can!
