Be The Light
Hello 2017!
I know it has been a while since we last connected here on Books & Things. The past year has been incredible in so many ways. 2016 was a year of creativity, exploring, trying new things, and ultimately, change. I look forward to sharing these new things with you as we continue into 2017.
To kick start this new creative endeavour, or shall I say continue it, I want to talk about the latest "Favourite Humanitarian" award. We're going full circle here, as yes it was the last thing I posted about. The 2017 People's Choice Awards recognized Tyler Perry with the honour of being the People's Choice for "Favourite Humanitarian". Now, Tyler Perry is a world-renowned producer, director, actor and philanthropist, but, I'm going to talk about his acceptance speech at the awards ceremony. It was nothing short of inspiring:
Perry encourages us to focus on being the light in the darkness. There simply has to be a balance between the two. Work each and every day to be brighter, to be kind and generous, to be happier and let that light shine onto the people that surround you. Be the good in the world. Of course this is not always possible, darkness trickles in and can definitely dampen your brightness. But just imagine if everyone tried to be the light and the goodness. Wouldn't you then have someone to help you out in return? Be the light as much as you can, as often as you can and trust me the light will be waiting when you need it. If everyone were to shine a little brighter, encourage each other more often, and help more willingly, imagine the good we could do. Imagine the light we would create. The world would be luminous!

His speech is particularly encouraging during this time of drastic change in the United States. The world is full of so much hate and violence; it's projected in many different ways and so easily distributed online. Sometimes you aren't aware just how much it is affecting you. Tyler Perry acknowledges this and draws attention to it. The negativity is right in the palm of your hand and you don't have to search for it, it is always waiting.
"What I have found and what has been so important to me right now, is that as I look at the state of the world and the state of our country and everything that is going on, it is so important that we know that no matter how dark it gets, we all have to be the light for each other."

So I encourage each one of you to be the light in the darkness. And when people need it,
"be that light for them. Let your light so shine before them."
The world is a beautiful place, it really is. But what makes it so, is the kindness and love that we share with each other. It is important to remember that at the core of everything in this crazy world, we are all in it together. We are all simply trying to live and be the best that we can, in as many different ways as we can. We are all human, and we all deserve love. Be the person to share that love and light with the world. Don't let the darkness dim it. Always remember that light is more powerful than darkness.
