Being Erica

You know that feeling you get when you come across something so awesome you have to tell everyone about it? It's this overwhelming desire for everyone to have the same love for it that you do. It's when you discover a new artist, or song, movie or TV show and it changes you and touches you so deeply that you want to infect others with the same feelings. So you tell everyone about it. You find yourself being annoying, pestering on and on about it. But it's really just because you love it so much and you want them to love it too. I do this all the time. I want my friends and family to be changed in the same way that I have been by whatever it is that I have discovered. And I love when people pester me in the same way. For one thing, I find myself in love with another amazing thing I didn't know about, and for another I discover a little more about the other person too.

This is life, really. Sharing our passions and our thoughts through different mediums. It's what I'm doing right now, and with all my posts before this. I'm hoping to infect your life with something that I think, like, or believe. I do it out of love and inspiration. I hope to encourage and inspire you with things that have given me the same.

I got a text from one of my dearest friends that said something like "I've started watching Being Erica and it's like our lives are on the screen". And I thought, wow what about my life is worth being in a TV show? I kept hearing about it from my friend and finally I had some time to check it out. And I'm so very glad that I did.

If you've never heard of it, the premise of the show is about Erica Strange, a woman in her early thirties who has had a slew of unlucky events grace her life, including dead end jobs and relationships.  She stumbles upon a man who says he can help her better her life. This mysterious man, named Dr. Tom, promises to treat Erica through what they call therapy. It is, however, not the typical therapy you are probably thinking of. Erica lists her regrets on a piece of paper and each episode addresses a regret that she has. Dr. Tom sends Erica back in time to give her a chance to fix her mistakes. By taking her back to look at her life he hopes she learns something about herself from her so called mistakes.

I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason and that your life is built upon the choices that you make. This show articulates that perfectly. More often than not Erica finds that her so called mistakes are inevitable, and she is able to learn from them the second time around. She finds that changing her choice doesn't necessarily change the outcome, but it just creates a different reaction in between. Every choice you make has a consequence, no matter what the choice may be. Erica comes out stronger when she comes back to the present as she often realizes that her initial choice was the right one.

What Dr. Tom insists on teaching her is that your decisions shape who you are and that who you are shapes your decisions. It's a circle that you can try to break if you want to but, as Erica finds when she goes back in time, your gut feeling is usually the right one.

The show is full of quotes that Dr. Tom uses to confuse and direct Erica into figuring out the lessons for herself. If you have been following my blog for a while, or know me personally, you know that I am obsessed with quotes. So when Dr. Tom spits out quotes that are relevant to the situation I get a little too excited. In the very first episode he says to Erica:

"We learn something by doing it. There is no other way." John Holt.

I have found this to be so very true. You really don't know what you are capable of until you try. The amount of learning that happens when you finally do something new is one of the greatest things. Life is full of opportunities, but you must seek them out and take them head on.

I have found this show to be therapy for my own mind and therefore my life. Erica is thrown into so many situations that speak to so many people and every episode is about her learning how to be a better version of herself. Which, if you haven't already noticed, is what I'm all about.

Trust me when I say that is this a show that hits the heartstrings, the mind, and the soul. It's really too bad that it only lasted 4 seasons. But Erica Strange, you are an inspiration and I hope that you (you reading this now) check out this show. It's on Netflix and it's so very worth it.

As a classmate of Erica's once said "We are the sum of our decisions, and as long as you are happy, that's all that matters". Look for happiness in your everyday life, It's a mood, not a place to strive towards. And always remember that each choice has a consequence, no matter which direction you choose. Sometimes there is no right answer, only the right answer for you.
