"Look Up"
This video took over my facebook feed a while back and I'm glad that it did. Remember my Blog post "Pay Attention to the World" ? It was about just how much we miss because we have some form of technology attached to us at all times. It was about going out there and experiencing things, meeting new people and not being so dependent on the technology that we now can't survive without--which is sad.
This video titled "Look Up" by Gary Turk exemplifies what I just described. This video moved me and I hope it brings something home to you as well. Children don't play like they used to. Toys, I'm afraid, will become irrelevant and obsolete soon. Kids are more interested in the games they can find on ipads, tablets, phones, and so many more. The unlimited accessibility to games on these devices is incredible. Incredible but hindering. I was talking to someone recently about getting out there and not being sucked into Netflix all the time. It's a dangerous world in technology. Instead of fueling the imagination we are working different parts of our brains-- which is good, but so is the imagination. Gone are the days where kids played Barbies, "house", and created adventures out of very little.
Don't get me wrong, technology is great, and yes it is an amazing networking system with many opportunities and such. People have said "it depends on the person" and I can agree it does. Letting technology take over ones life depends on the personality of the person, to an extent. Whats is really worrisome is the people/ children whom are now growing up not knowing the difference. Technology is so appealing. everything is right at your fingertips, that in itself is a powerful thing. To powerful sometimes.
I think it comes down to respect. Our ability to socialize properly and respectfully has diminished. When you can't have a conversation with someone without checking your phone and responding to whatever is happening on it we have a problem. You don't always need to be accessible. You just don't. People lived without it for so long. Pick up the phone and chat with someone, be social and leave your phone at home or at least in your purse/coat pocket.
I'm not trying to say I'm innocent of this, I'm just as guilty as the next guy. I'm merely saying that we all need to try and do better. To look up and appreciate the world we live in and the people we share it with. We only get one shot at it so why aren't we making the absolute most of it? This really is a video that everyone needs to see. Watch it, enjoy it, understand it and then turn of the device you watched it on and go outside.
